Long time hardly any posts. Time was good. Back to saddi Dilli.. in winters had loads of fun in early 2009 and guess the good times are here again as Nov is chilly this time around!!

Sometimes I miss the evening Sydney sky- clear blue one as if cleaned by the mighty one for us to ponder over his beautiful creations. I loved it when I used to go back home sometimes for lunch ( used to stay in CBD) while sea breeze used to come over from Darling Harbour in to the King Street and blow into my face..

Had the same feeling while cruising on amazing Ladakh roads riding on a Thunderbird.. searching for the monasteries in remote locations..The sky at night in Ladakh is just like the one which used to be there at the planetariums enthralling us in childhood as we looked at it as collections of different light bulbs....I saw at least 5 shooting stars within half an hour at 3.30 AM in the morning ..while looking at the sky with cold winds blowing from across the barren mountains making the experience surreal.. From what I saw on the Ladakh trip early this year my admiration for the Indian Army keeps on increasing.. They are the living examples of 'mind over matter' theory.. where they live ..we can't spend more than a few hours. My experience at Changla Pass was on the same lines.. people do not/ are not supposed to spend more than 15 -20 minutes on the pass due to the lack of oxygen and the chilly winds... however.. when I went through the pass this year.. 3-4 Sikh soldiers of Sikh LI were there since morning and from what I gathered they are 'posted' at Changla !!! What great fortitude !! Hats off and my salutes..

Interesting so far..

Life down under has been pretty interesting so far with a bit of beauty of surroundings, new friendships, new culture at work and outside, long hours of sleep ( quite contrary to my usual self) on the weekends and so many more things.

Till date there have been three days which were most eventful, the first one being meeting up with ‘Tugga’ Steve Waugh. Just happened to meet up with him while taking an after lunch stroll in the streets. For the first few minutes I was just staring at him and smiling. Appropriately, after a couple of minutes of the unrelenting gaze from my side he shot an exclamatory look. Of course one has the leeway of being in a daze whence one meets up with the childhood hero and that too by sheer random luck. By the end of the talks I did what I know best- blabbering about markets and we had small chat on <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:stockticker st="on">AIG</st1:stockticker> and its future (this was before the Bailout).

The second memorable day was the trip to Canberra’s Floriade. It had the most beautiful collection of tulips and their derivatives( I mean multicolored tulips like a mix of an orange and purple etc) . The countryside/outback in Aussieland is amazingly beautiful with an amazing array of flora and fauna. I would say Sydney has got the best of all worlds, with an amazing mix of beaches, mountains (snowy ones too), caves and forests all located within a small radius (300km). It rained half the way to Canberra and almost the full way back. I have never seen so many rainbows in such a short period of my life as I have here. Infact on one fine day I saw two rainbows in the sky!!

<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

The third memorable day was the Annual Conf. of I Bankers where we witnessed behind the door presentation of the past, present and future of I banking in this part of the world. It also provided a platform to meetup with the country heads from around the world including the current BOSS and the most probable one for future. Great perspectives and amazingly talented people provided the maximum amount of motivation possible to each other for weathering the storm the world is currently witnessing.

Generally each day has brought new things in life on personal and professional front. However, all said and done one misses India every passing moment and more so on the Festival of Lights-Diwali. Enjoy all you lucky fellas for you are in India where sweets were exchanged and crackers were burst. Not that it did’nt happen here. Of course we do our part here but it’s not the same. To top it all was working on Diwali..There is a price for all the good things..

Downunder..

It's been over a month now... Hectic to say the least, but it was indeed a very interesting period of life. One gets to know the limits to which one can stretch oneself only becasue of resilience and the depth of interest in a field. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience as in any case I never had the luxury of getting several job offers in two days.

Global Mkts role at I-bnk would be something which I may rue/mull over for some time. Hope life takes me to places where I want to reach as my passion for getting in to Mkts makes me get up at night and think about the missed chance which stemmed from the inability of the campus recruitment process of a bank to offer appropriate remuneration.

The Oz option is more like one of the famous bidding cases which had a good part of the valuation coming from the real option of the project in the future..

Valutions are still on...

New life post ISB or the same one with new perspective...yet to decide...

Night Time at ISB....

Night time at ISB is not the least of lonely times.. infact the afternoons can be sometimes much more lonely time..
..
even if one is loaded with a number of assignments and is working till 3 Am..and expects no one to be around, when one goes out to get a cup of tea...dont be surprised if you find plenty of folks doing their stuff.. assigments, boozing, getting a cup for themselves..etc...

New year came in and till date not free from the asgnmnts.. no break what soever this time as asgnmnts are getting over by Monday morning..

Fin Eng. course in term 6 was the most enjoyable one till date.. and I feel lucky to have met the like of George Chacko.... what pedigree!!..and what exp!

Death Spiral Converts etc.. good stuff to know...

lets see what T 7 brings in...

by the way at ISB since now i am accustomed to sleeping less than 6 hours per day... i watch all the IND Aus matches in the morning ...almost every ball and then set out to do the asgnmnts...
cool na... after a long time .. i had the privilage..Laxman was amazing today... esp the first 50 in 43 balls ... only he can do it..

Hope the others continue the good show tom....

After three weeks..

Had the D day with GS today.. one of the most made up interview I ever had .. Term 2 passed on.. Was in Delhi for 4 days and to be honest this was the first time in my life when I did not enjoy being there.. I missed ISB a lot..What ever people say about the pressure etc. but the fact is that I enjoy being here.. Third is almost through and in couple of weeks we will have our end terms..

This term we had lots to do ...yep..even more than the 2nd term..Lots of pleaseant memories.. My favorite one would be meeting up with Jay.. I mean how many times in an Indian B School you get to meet the person whose case you solve and discuss in the class... I can't forget the look on the face of the couple of cynics in the class when they realised that one of the persons who started the PE fund on which class discussion was being held and the verbal warfare was unleashed , was sitting in the class all this while and listning to all the budding business gurus.. :-) ...

Lecture by Jeff Sachs was ok but no meta text.. Infact the dullest moments in the whole term were in the MCK structured problem solving sessions..no meta text..pretty ordinary stuff..

After coming to ISB, the body clock adjusts as per the class timings..In 1st term I was sleeping at 12-1 Am and getting up at 6 Am which was my regular sleep cycle.. 2nd term I slept at 2 am and got up at 8 .. well the third term has seen the emrgence of a CHOWKIDAR.. i sleep at 5 AM and get up at 9-10 ...Wonder whats gonna happen in 4th term...

Ist term went by....

The first term went by and it seemed, as if one was standing on the side, letting it go, like a flowing river.. One eighth of the course is over. It was a typical first term involving lot of slogging and getting accustomed to taking the pressure. When it comes to pressure, all of us are taking while trying to imbibe the 'leader like' qualities the mind starts to wonder is it all worth it.. On one end of the spectrum is the thought stream that we work to live and therefore, the pressure should be as much, as one can take without undue effects on presonal life and on the other end of the horizon is the harboring place for the unreasonable herds.... I have almost always wandered on the edge of the latter in the last seven- eight years of my life. Over the years, the part of discontentment has been partially due to the unfulfilled potential or the fire that keeps on burning and taking one forward towards the unfathomed.. During the last one year and especially due to bad health I think I have started moving over the curve of the spectrum to somewhere between the two ends of the thoughtstreams..... It has been a conscious move to mould one self from being a TYPE A++ to a mild A or maybe a Type B.. and I guess this year may be a defining point.. There is no doubt that being the typical Type A has taken me so far, but as the pressure keeps on increasing one has to step back and take a look at the bigger picture for long term sustainance..

I did not put in as much as I could have the first term as I could easily have and played catch on with many aspects of life which I ignored eariler..Was expecting good results in FADM and the marks are slightly above average but not upto my satisfaction.. Eco exam was good and Stats was a disaster.. I did reasonably well in Marketing exam too...

After the end term went out and watched a couple of movies and also went to Golcunda fort. Also watched the sound and light show, it was a good insight in to the history of the magnificient fort.. It is not as magnanimous as the Agra fort and the ones in Jaipur etc still was a nice place to visit.... I guess it is more like Hyderabad the city not rated as high as Delhi and Mumbai but it is a wonderful place to be...

Next term starts on Monday and I am really looking forward to the Macro Eco course and most importantly sitting in the first row.. thats the only place where I really enjoy sitting in any kind of class or meeting or seminar...

Mid Terms went by like a perfume ball...

Mid terms have whizzed pass too... like a perfume ball from Ambrose...Stats was Ok and Micro Eco was not good atall.. Lots of parties, new friends , dunkings etc etc.. have added another another memorable phase in life..Trying to make sense of it all and pick up the momentum...Hope I am back to the best of myself before long...

Day after the midterm exams begin.. Have covered most of the concepts....But man this place is competitive!!.. ppl are going nuts solving all kinds of problems of all related topics.. I have met people who are sleeping 3-4 hours a day for the last one week..!!! All this for mid terms!! Gods will stop and see the ISBians preparing for the end terms it seems...Can you think of a more competitive environment??

Still the life gets along somehow making sense in this phase of hyper existence .... All I can say about my stay here is that I have lived each day as it ought to be lived...I have studied a lot, played a lot, learnt swimming, pumped iron, attended dance sessions.. sat in library for long hours...checked mail @ zillion times / day and so on... It has been over one month now and it seems that I have landed just now....

It feels really great to be in the company of such an intellectual crop... Robert aka Bob stine .. the stats prof is THE GOD albit the one claimed himself to be, seems a lesser mortal and is completely overshadowed by the Stiner..Seeing the qualitative difference and the approach towards imparting the business education between the profs from Wharton, Kellogs etc.. makes me wonder, why I couldnt wait for one more year and appd to the US Univs.. But I guess taking in the Cost and 'India' factors .. it is a trade of risk and returns.....

Off for the preps now.. would see what I have to write after the first exams here...

LIFE Begins

The first few days have literally filed past at MACH 5 and not anything less..IT seems just yesterday I got off at Rajiv Gandhi Airport ( i hope the name is correct) at HYD and 7 days have passed.... It is a different life inside the campus altogether...The attrium.., Khemka , AC 1...4...6..8 and so on..LRC ..gosh everything is just too good... The layout of the student villages.. recreation centre etc is amazing .. and lastly the ppl who are in here.. are from diverese backgrounds indeed and each one is a specialist in some thing or the other...Hats off to Mck etc.. for creating such an institute...

Sports, studies( though not in full flow) sessions at Audi take most of the time during the day.. evenings are made up of socializing esp at the parties..Though am being troubled due to a sluggish liver.. hope I keep well enough to go through the rigours of the course...

Lets see where this year takes me...

The Honeymoon period--

Work life is much more hectic post resignation ....handling more responsibilities.. helping out other departments and selling the unrelated products..No saviour .. no knight in shining armour since one has applied for the 'emigration'!!... whatever they say about the honeymoon period ....

Till date I keep on wondering whether ISB is the right path or not.. many people in the industry have the typical comment of 'ISBians are not good performers..they cant be better than IIMs' etc etc type of comments which pull one down.. but then this years palcements etc have been good. I did speak to the 'processes' department at ISB and was informed that the the placement results would come out in the last week of March in papers...Hope it is as good as it seems.

Still feel the pinch of not being able to apply to US univs because of bad health.. Resignation from the current post implies that all my stock options would not be exercisable any more, bonuses and other emoluments would not be handed out. I have to return a good amount of money to them which was handed out to me on expectation of being in the organisation for another few years. The promotion for which I was due in the coming year can now take be awarded to someone who is going to stay in the Bank for long.

The proposition was dilemmatic, since it was a choice, between freedom arising out of severing all old ties,
to embrace the future with expectations of making it big, while fighting for one's slot and job security with all the cushions of coming back to the current bank with the option of choosing the area of interest like I banking or treasury. I chose the former, for it means living a more exciting life with a lot to look forward to. I was getting quite emotional while typing the resignation, since this bank has really taken good care of me while I was performing for them. I have learnt a lot, made a lot of friends and realised my own potential while negotiating for those multi crore deals and winning them from the bigger and better banks. I feel happy that I was the first one to get such deals for this bank and then the rest followed. The awareness of ones own potential and the relationships which I carry from this organisation would last me a lifetime.

I met the love of my life while I was in this bank looking out for a change and eventually got married to her. I made friends and guides like Milan Sir and Ritesh. Met some very good people and got to know the various aspects of job which are not in the JDs and which I did not learn in my previous three jobs. Though we were paid less, in spite of being in the fastest growing private sector bank in India, I have seen some of the happiest employees in this organisation and how can I forget the great PK sir. He is a phenomena himself!! I wish all the very best to this organisation.

In the meanwhile Amesterdam MIF admissions committee has send me the call for a telephonic interview to be help later this week. I will definately give the interview and see whether they are going to accept this ISB admit or not!!

Getting admission in ISB, the thoughts of being there with a such a bright bunch of people is all very exciting. In part I feel happy too. Somehow I still feel I could have done better, I am not
having that feeling of elation which one gets anyway near actualisation. I had talks with the Arvind in Vanderbilt, with a TUCK admit and a Queens admit about the feeling of dissatisfaction and all agreed with me in putting in these apps. I guess after having the worst phase of my life on the health front during the last five months where in I was not able to app, I have decided that I would put in the applications for HBS, WT, ROSS and TUCK now. Though all of these would be for the third round where the chances for an admit are alreay quite low, I would still prefer to apply and see whether I can churn out good apps when am in better shape. Sometimes I wonder whether I would ever feel satisfied. Then I rationalise and tell myself to try to go for World's best from India's best...and that would be the last thing...

The journey continues........

TO ISB>>>>>>>>>>>>

ISB HERE I COME..............

So Destiny it is

Got my final result from INSEAD -- the same ol email from the ad cord about thanking me for the interest and offering me the apology for the rejection... I did mention earlier, the moment I came out of the interview, I had this thing going on almost as an afterthought or perhaps that extra sens. percep. kinda of feeling that the interviewer was perhaps floating in some other realm being a passout from INSEAD.. How I wished and dreamnt of landing up at FONTY only I know.. after getting the interview call I was making plans every day on getting things in order for landing up at FONTY...May be because of the fact that very few applicants are rejected post interview at INSEAD and partially because of the good hit rate in interviews which I had in my life prior to THE INTERVIEW..

On the other hand I always used to wonder whether going to INSEAD would after all be a wise decision at all or not.. ISB is a part of the INDIA story and INSEAD represents the past glories.... It would have been another dilemma selecting between the promise of the future or the glory of the past.. It is how one sees it.. Infact throughout the process of admissions, I must be honest here, ISB has been most impressive.. As far as processes, co ordination, professionalism etc. go ISB has been way ahead of INSEAD ( In the admission processes- I repeat).... Then the alumni himself had acknowledged the fact that the placments from INSEAD would not be a sure thing as would be in the case of ISB....Stories of studets coming back from INSEAD to India without the jobs have been doing rounds in the student circles....

Guess the destiny catches up with you any how.. ISBs new admit site along with all the details etc.. has been most informative. It takes care of all the issues which the students have to face and all the tasks which have to be completed for the registration etc.. The community which I opened at orkut is full of professionals from all kinds of backgrounds , all seemingly very excited at the prospect of joining ISB and spending one of the most interesting years of their lives in Hyderabad...on the other hand if one sees the insead's community as well as its yahoogroup, one can sense an eerie silence arising out of total lack of activities there... It may be becasue of the very busy lifes of INSEAD students or lack of excitement.. one wonders where lies the truth.. what is the correct 'Choice' , which is the right path.. I do have only one path to tread upon as of now and only the time would unfold........ the untold .....

INSEAD INTERVIEW

Finally it happened on the 9th of January after agonizing best wishes from the two designated interviewers while they informed that they would not be able to take the interview due to a very hectic tour schedule--whatever their tours were!

Got in touch with this INSEAD alumni who was the third person designated by INSEAD as my interviewer... Got in touch with him around 21st Dec and fixed up a call for the 1st Jan 2007.. I sent him a message on the new year asking for the time of the interview and also wishing him all the best of the new year...

In between I kept the admit cord posted about the proceedings and in between also let her know that I was a bit worried about the interviews.. Because the final results for R 1 were expected on 19th jan and here I was - a helpless chap wanting some one to take his INSEAD interview .... and no one in this wide world to take the same.. INSEAD adcom wanted the interview score by 10th only and no later...

So the D date was set to 9th Jan by the alumni... From the moment I entered, it was more of a conversation than an Interview. It started with the regular ' take me thru your CV'? 'Why INSEAD? Why Now? Why after doing the Indian MBA? How was your exp of the Indian MBA?..Are your acads till date a good indicator of your potential at INSEAD?

Honestly speaking very very un impressive and routine stuff.. I was also grilled for the extremely low undergraduation scores which I do have..-:(.. I was told the greatness of INSEAD along with the dismal job scenario which can materialize if the Europe scene is not great...

He asked me in details about why and how I pepped myself up to improve in life and to grow.. I must say that the alumni was a very stable and calculative kind of guy. Though again I would reiterate that he seemed very helpful.. He had drawn the lines quite clearly." I would not let u know what kind of feedback I am gonna write " ; " i like your energy levels"; " you set achievable goals" and so on... The honest butt head I have always been I even told him that I have already been admitted to ISB but my dream is INSEAD and ISB is just a backup..

Some times when you come out of the the interview you get an intution or a feeling about the final result..After coming out of this one I got the feeling that I have an admit in my pocket coz overall being a sales person you also get a feeling about how well you have pitched and I was pretty much satisfied with it in the end... Thinking about it after few days, I sometimes feel that I may not be given v good marks by the alumni becasue of my undergraduation marks ..

As the admissions cord said ' Fingures crossed its gonna be out on 17/01/2007'

Hoping the dream comes true.....

Dream Vs Destiny

Sometimes it gets difficult to go with the dreams when the destiny is calling... Initially never
wanted to applyfor ISB some how in the last few days before the deadline started the app and
in the end managed to get together a pretty decent one..Went for interview got the admit.. some how that satisfaction level is not there....
